California High-Speed Rail Project, Merced-Fresno, CA
CSA worked on the noise and vibration portion of the Merced-Fresno segment of the California High-Speed Rail Project (CA HSR). The CA HSR project is the largest high-speed rail project in the United States. The Merced-Fresno portion was one of two segments applying for ARRA funding, and was the first through the environmental process. The Merced-Fresno segment consulting team was at the forefront of policy and process formation for the entire project. CSA staff worked on the analysis of the noise and vibration data, directed the modeling of the impacts and wrote the noise and vibration technical report and EIS/EIR section. CSA staff also developed the project wide noise and vibration mitigation guidelines, used by the consultant teams on all the project segments.
FTA Noise and Vibration Impact Assessment Training Courses
CSA staff have been instructors for the FTA’s noise and vibration impact assessment training courses for over 10 years, with the most recent courses in St. Paul, MN in April 2013 and Atlanta, GA in June 2013. The three day course, sponsored by the National Transit Institute, covers the entire noise and vibration guidance manual, including screening, general and detailed assessments for noise and vibration, along with information on mitigation measures and construction noise and vibration. CSA staff have taught over 300 students, including consultants, state DOT and agency staff, and FTA regional and headquarters staff.
Northampton Lumberyard Vibration Assessments
CSA studied the effect of train noise and vibration on the proposed Lumberyard affordable housing project in Northampton. Long-term measurements were used to characterize the existing noise and vibration environment. These data were then used to provide architectural recommendations to ensure interior noise and vibration levels would be acceptable to occupants.
Southwest LRT Final Environmental Impact Statement, Minneapolis, MN
CSA is currently working on the noise and vibration portion of the SW LRT FEIS project. The work includes updating the DEIS noise and vibration Image953 impact assessment, responding to comments on the DEIS, conducting supplemental environmental work and conducting a detailed noise and vibration assessment of the corridor. The project includes options for co-locating the LRT in a freight rail corridor or relocating the freight traffic to another line to accommodate the LRT project.
Union Station/Burnham Place Concept Feasibility Study, Washington D.C.
The planned renovation and expansion of Washington D.C.’s union station will require decades of planning and budgeting to produce a luxury experience for tenants and passengers. CSA provided consulting services to assess the acoustical environment inside the existing station areas and future interior environments in new spaces. We recommended sound and vibration mitigation measures based on precedents at similar facilities to ensure compatibility between subsurface transit operations and residential spaces in the proposed overbuild. The general contractor was then able to use these recommendations to assess constructability and estimate construction costs.
Connect Cobb Northwest Transit Corridor BRT Environmental Assessment, Atlanta, GA
CSA conducted a noise and vibration impact assessment for proposed BRT service from downtown Atlanta to Kennesaw in Cobb County, GA. The work included conducting existing noise measurements in a heavily traveled corridor along I-75 and the Cobb Parkway, assessing the impacts of the introduction of BRT service and preparing the noise and vibration section of the environmental document.
