Training

Cross-Spectrum Acoustics (CSA) staff has been involved in noise and vibration training for over fifteen years.  We teach courses on transit noise and vibration, procedures for conducting noise and vibration measurements and training in the use of specific measurement equipment.  Contact us for more information about specific training needs.

Transit Noise and Vibration Training

In 1995, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) released the guidance manual “Transit Noise and Vibration Impact Assessment” for use in transit projects around the United States.  Since its release, the FTA guidance manual has become the definitive noise and vibration analysis tool for transit agencies across the US.  Soon after the release of the manual, the National Transit Institute (NTI) commissioned a training course based on the manual to instruct consultants, planners, engineers and agency staff on the FTA analysis methods and policies.

The noise and vibration training course was updated in 2006 with the release of the revised FTA guidance manual, and has continued to undergo revisions and improvements over the years.

Lance Meister and Herb Singleton of CSA are the instructors for the FTA/NTI Noise and Vibration Impact Assessment training courses.  They have trained over 400 students on the FTA’s noise and vibration methodology during the past fifteen years.

The three day course, sponsored by NTI, covers the entire noise and vibration guidance manual, including:

  • Noise and vibration basics
  • Screening procedures
  • General assessments
  • Detailed assessments
  • Mitigation measures
  • Construction noise and vibration
  • FTA vs. FHWA noise criteria
  • Noise measurement procedures
  • Joint use corridors
  • Reporting

In addition to the CSA instructors, a representative from FTA attends each course, providing background on the FTA’s methodology, requirements, and reporting.

For more information on the course content, upcoming course dates and locations, or if you are interested in hosting a course, please contact us, or visit the NTI website.  The NTI website also provides valuable information regarding many other transit courses they sponsor on a variety of topics.

Measurement Equipment and Procedures Training

One of the most important aspects of conducting noise and vibration measurements is having the right equipment for your needs and knowing how to use it properly.  CSA staff can train you or your staff on the use of noise and vibration measurement equipment and proper measurement procedures.  We train consultants, community members, government staff members, regulators, and law enforcement members.

We can help you to pick the appropriate measurement equipment for your needs, or help to train you on your current equipment.  We can also assist you with calibration, care and maintenance of your equipment.  Contact us if you would like to inquire about our equipment training.
